Yeast Collection RIBM 655
Unique collection of brewing yeasts
Beer quality begins with raw materials — and one of the most crucial components is brewing yeast. Our Collection of Brewing Microorganisms (RIBM 655) holds 115 strains of bottom- and top-fermenting brewing yeasts. These pure production cultures ensure stable sensory characteristics and high beer quality.
History and international significance
The collection was founded in 1946 and has been operating independently since 1953. It is unique in Central and Eastern Europe and has been part of the Federation of Czech and Slovak Microorganism Collections since 1964. It is used not only in Czech breweries, but also throughout Europe and the USA. The collection is internationally registered under the acronym RIBM 655.
Genetic resource preservation
Since 1996, the collection has been part of the National Program for the Conservation of Microbial Genetic Resources, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic. Since 2006, yeast strains have been preserved in cryovials with protective medium in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C. Cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen is considered the optimal method for long-term storage of viable yeast cultures.
Wide selection of yeast cultures
We supply yeast in an active state on slanted agar or in fermented wort, which facilitates its immediate use in production. The collection of microorganisms harmful to beer contains wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria isolated from beer and the brewing environment.
For breweries and research
The collection serves not only breweries, but also research institutions such as the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, Charles University, Masaryk University, and the Czech Academy of Sciences.
