We are the Research Institute of Brewing and Malting, Inc., an organization focused on research and knowledge dissemination, in compliance with the regulations of the European Union (Commission Regulation (EU) No. 651/2014, Article 2, point 83). We successfully carry out research, development, and innovation projects supported by public funding, while also collaborating with industrial partners on contractual (commissioned, collaborative) research. We are also involved in a number of international projects.
Our long-standing tradition and strong ties to industry enable us to effectively transfer new technologies from the laboratory into practical application.

RESEARCH

We systematically expand knowledge in the fields of brewing, raw materials, and technologies. Our research activities encompass both basic and applied research. Through scientific methods, we deliver innovations with practical applications in brewing practice, improving product quality and contributing to the further development of the industry.

DEVELOPMENT

Science and research are driving the brewing industry forward. We are engaged in the development of new or improved raw materials, products, and technologies that reflect the latest knowledge and trends in the field.

INNOVATION

We test innovative processes, develop prototypes, and verify their functionality—from laboratory testing to pilot-scale production. Our innovations contribute to improved product quality, more efficient production, and the sustainable development of the entire industry.

The formulation and evaluation of research and development strategies are overseen by our Scientific Council, which serves as an advisory body to the Director of the Institute. The Council is composed of respected experts, including representatives from academia, research institutions, and industry. The main focus areas of our activities also include topics related to Czech beer and its specific characteristics.

Our research activities are managed and coordinated by the Research and Development Manager,
under whom the Scientific Secretary operates.

Public Research

In the Czech Republic, research, development, and innovation are funded from public sources, specifically from the state budget. We make use of the following types of support:

Institutional support (pursuant to § 3, paragraph 3 of Act No. 130/2002 Coll.) – provided for the long-term conceptual development of the research organization based on achieved results.

Targeted funding – aimed at supporting specific projects and grants within public calls for proposals. These calls are administered by their respective providers.

We are listed in the Register of Research Organizations maintained by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and meet the European Union’s requirements for research and knowledge dissemination. In accordance with the Research, Development and Innovation Strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture, we have developed a Long-Term Development Plan for our research organization (DKRVO).

Contract research

Contract research refers to research and development services provided to businesses based on their specific requests. We conduct targeted research tailored to the individual needs of the customer, with costs and a reasonable profit margin covered by the client.

Our areas of focus?

Our contract research covers a wide range of areas, primarily in brewing, malting, and other sectors of the food industry.

We are equipped with modern laboratories and pilot-scale technological facilities, where we can simulate real production conditions—for example, in our experimental malt house or quarter-/semi-industrial scale brewery.

  • optimization of production technologies,
  • analysis of raw material composition and processing,
  • development of new methods to ensure product quality and shelf life,
  • analysis of aging processes in beverages and food products,
  • physical and chemical factors affecting product quality
  • development of new products tailored to customer requirements.

Confidentiality and Cooperation

All information entrusted to us by our clients is treated with the utmost care and confidentiality. When necessary, we enter into non-disclosure agreements that clearly define the handling of both technical and commercial information.

Our services are used primarily by breweries and malt houses from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as by wineries and other food industry enterprises. Thanks to our long-standing experience and state-of-the-art facilities, we offer high value-added research that helps businesses innovate and optimize their production.

Technology transfer

We have a long-standing tradition of close cooperation with the beverage industry, particularly in the fields of brewing and malting. Thanks to our extensive experience, we are able to quickly and efficiently translate research and development results into practice and respond flexibly to the needs of our industrial partners.

Our expertise in technology transfer was strengthened through our involvement in the project Support for Innovation Transfer in Agriculture, Food Production, and Bioenergy under the Operational Programme Education for Competitiveness. In 2010, we co-founded the Technology Transfer Centre for Agriculture, Food Production, and Bioenergy (CTT ZPB), where we closely cooperate with leading research institutions.

Together, we strive to commercialize research results, and by sharing professional services in legal, marketing, and strategic areas, we increase efficiency and reduce the costs associated with technology transfer.

Our experts in specific areas of technology transfer:

  • Brewing and Malting: Tomáš Brányik
  • Barley and Malt: Vratislav Psota
  • Beer, hop: Martin Slabý, Aleš Mikyška
  • Microbiology of the Beverage Industry:
    Petra Kubizniaková
  • Laboratory Analyses in the Beverage Industry: Tomáš Vrzal, Jana Olšovská
  • Contaminants in Beverages: Sylvie Běláková

One of our key strengths is the effective implementation of various forms of knowledge transfer, which deliver added value not only to our partners but to the entire industry.

International Cooperation

We collaborate with a number of international research and industrial organizations, both formally through joint projects and informally through the personal networks of our experts.
